Fireside questions
We have spent countless evenings discussing the nuances of the retreat. Below is a careful assembly of the questions most frequently posed by our readers.
We recommend reserving no less than 90 minutes. A single cycle of heat (15 mins), cold (2 mins), and rest (20 mins) requires nearly 40 minutes. Completing two to three cycles without rushing is paramount to the physiological benefits.
It is inadvisable to enter immediately following a heavy meal, as blood is diverted to the digestive tract, straining the cardiovascular system under heat. A light snack an hour prior, however, ensures blood sugar remains stable.
It is not mandatory, but it is the soul of the experience. The creation of löyly (the steam) dramatically increases the perceived heat and humidity, softening the harsh, dry air that can irritate the respiratory tract.
Always consult a physician prior to contrast therapy. Those with uncontrolled hypertension, heart disease, or who are pregnant should generally avoid extreme thermal shifts. Children typically have lower heat tolerance and should be monitored stringently, following specific local age advisories.
Eucalyptus globulus acts as a mild expectorant, clearing the sinuses when inhaled via steam. Birch branches (vihta) are gently slapped against the skin to stimulate surface circulation and release a sweet, forest-like aroma.
A sauna is a wood-clad room running at high heat (70-90°C) with low to moderate humidity (10-30%). A steam room is typically clad in stone or tile, running at lower heat (40-50°C) but near 100% humidity.
